Sadly, many ponder the question: What is domestic violence? They perceive it is something that cannot happen to them. They envision poor, desperate women who cannot “get out of the situation.” However, it has been documented that domestic violence can happen to anyone, male or female; child or adult. Income levels do not matter; the abusers have no particular make-up. Various individuals and groups have defined domestic violence as everything from saying unkind or demeaning words, grabbing a person's arm, hitting, kicking, choking, or even murdering. Think about the instances described below: black female with four children is constantly abused by her husband physically and emotionally, black females with a college education has four children, and an alcoholic and abusive husband who is also in the military, and black females with two master degrees and a wealth of content knowledge and family values stays with abusive and manic husband for eleven years before she decides to leave the situation. All three of these situations are true. These women belong to the same family; they have strong morals and values, and they all started out wanting safe and cohesive marriages. They all said that they never saw abusive qualities in these men. In fact, they went as far as saying that they even talked about abuse with these men while they were dating them. (“Diagnosis, Treatment, Prognosis and Prevention” 21-23) Unfortunately, there are many women who have been in these same situations. The problem is that there is not enough transparency and openness so that these women would have felt safe and comfortable going to the proper agencies and authorities to get help.

Domestic violence, also known as domestic abuse or spousal abuse, does not single out any particular group. It ensures within all ethnic backgrounds, age ranges, and pecuniary levels. The abuse may occur during a relationship, while the couple is breaking up, or after the relationship has ended. The Commonwealth Fund Survey found that around the world, at least one in every three women have been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Also, nearly one-third of American women, 31 percent, are reporting being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives. Additionally, while women are less likely than men to be victims of violent crimes overall, women are five to eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.
