2.0IntroductionLeadership simply refers to the process of influencing people to achieve a goal and leaders are the ones who guide the mass towards the goal by influencing them with the help of different leadership qualities. Leaders could be of various kinds like political, religious, business, organisational. The following report will be on a real life leader. This report will give an insight on one's life, career, major events (that shaped his life) and critically analyse the qualities, shortcomings, achievements, failures concerning his / her leadership. The report will also compare the leadership theories with the findings of leadership qualities of the selected leader. In brief the report will research on the selected leader, identify one's leadership qualities, compare the findings with current leadership theories and in the end draw conclusion. The report will be on Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad the longest serving prime minister and leader of Malaysia.3.0 "The Leader" - Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad3.1 Early YearsUnlike his predecessors Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad had a humble beginning. Mahathir was born on the 20th December 1925 as the youngest son of Mohamad Iskandar, a school teacher. Mahathir Mohamad was born in Alor Star, capital of Malaysian state of Kedah. In his childhood he studied in a Malay school in Sebrang, Perak. Then later on he enrolled in Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Star, his home town. After completing his college studies Mahathir wanted to a law degree from United Kingdom but he did not get the admission. Then subsequently he went for medical studies in Singapore at the King Edward VII Medical College. During his university days Mahathir use to regular write in 'The Straits Times' under the nick name 'Che Det'. He was also the president of Muslim Society in the university. After completing his medical studies in 1953 he started practicing medicine in government service as a medical officer and then later on in 1957 he started private practice Alor Star. In 1956, Mahathir got married to fellow doctor Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and is the proud father of 5 beautiful children.3.2 Political CareerDr. Mahathir took part in active in politics since his college days in 1945. Since 1946 he has been a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). In 1964 General Election he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the first time. Later in 1969 he lost the election and his seat in the parliament. Dr. Mahathir was sacked from his position in UMNO supreme council and later on his party membership was cancelled due to his bold criticism of then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman's biased handling of the 1969 racial riots in Kuala Lumpur. Mahathir was permitted to join UMNO in 1972 and in 1973 he was appointed a senator of the upper house of the Malaysian parliament.
