Dr President Obama Essay

630 words - 3 pages

Dear President-elect Obama: A Proposal to Curb Growth in the United States Dear President-elect Obama: Realizing that time is of the essence, I would like to propose a plan to curb growth in the United States. What? In these economic times?! Actually, the growth I am referring to is the “national poundage”, the epidemic crisis of obesity in the United States. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) attributes 400,000 deaths in our country each year to overweight, just 35,000 less than attributed to smoking; in 2002, more than $92 billion was spent on health care related to obesity. This problem affects Americans in all 50 states regardless of gender, age, state, ethnicity, or educational level, although it is worse for the young and the poor. More than half of the population meets the criteria for overweight, and even sadder, 64 % of children between the ages of 6 and ...view middle of the document...

But progress in these areas would seem bittersweet if the health of our nation continues to decline. So, here is my proposal to engage the citizens and the government of our country in the “war on fat”. (2) The prescription for weight loss is pretty simple; the calories consumed must be less than the calories expended. The purpose of this proposal is not to present another diet plan; instead, the focus here is on the quality of calories consumed, particularly in the poorest of communities, for it is well established that the less money a family has, the poorer the diet and the greater the risk for obesity (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2004, 79 (1)). The plan here is two-fold: first, creating inner-city farms across the nation, and second, revamping that rather obscure piece of legislation known as the farm bill. (3) Between 1985 and 2000, the price of fruits and vegetables rose 40%, yet the cost of soda (liquid corn) fell 23%. How is it that it’s cheaper to manufacture a Twinkie than to provide produce? According to Pollan, the culprit is the farm bill, legislation that determines which crops will be subsidized. Three of the five supported crops—corn, soybeans, and wheat—provide the major ingredients for “junk” foods such as Twinkies. Farmers are paid by the (4) bushel for raising these subsidized crops, creating a food system with an abundance of processed sugar (from corn) and fat (from soybeans) with almost no support for farmers growing produce. The rewarding of quantity over quality has also produced farming practices that pollute our water and threaten the existence of foreign farmers (through artificially Thank you for taking the time to consider my proposal. When you decide it is a viable proposition, you can count on me to initiate our very own community farm here in Niwot, Colorado. May grace and wisdom continue to be your constant companions. Sincerely, Ola Lau P.S. Just in case you check on me, I’ll ‘fess up now; I didn’t vote for you the first time around, but you did get my vote the next time.
