The movie describes the story of Erin Brockovich, a struggling single mother who becomes connected to Ed Masry’s law firm because of an unfortunate car accident. She becomes interested in the cases between the community members of Hinkley, CA and a company by the name of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), who have a plant in Hinkley. Several families in the Hinkley community have various health problems, from headaches, to miscarriages, to gastrointestinal cancer. Principle of Utilitarianism – weighing social cost ands and benefits
There are approximately 20,000 employees who carry out Pacific Gas and Electric Company's primary business—the transmission and delivery of energy. The company provides natural gas and electric service to approximately 16 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California.
PG&E used hexavalent chromium to fight corrosion in the cooling water. This type of toxic is known to be lethal when wastewater dissolved it from the cooling towers and was discharged to unlined ponds at the site.
Their irresponsible usage of hexavalent has affected several families in the Hinkley community who have various health problems, from headaches, to miscarriages, to gastrointestinal cancer.
Utilitarianism principle, specifically traditional utilitarianism, says that the right action for a particular occasion is the one that produces more utility than any other possible action. In this case, PG&E complied in this principle as it is serving more customers and providing jobs to an approximately 20,000 employees.
However, utilitarian principle also declares that all foreseeable future costs and benefits that each alternative will provide for each individual must be taken into account, as any significant indirect effects. PG&E was well aware the danger of hexavalent to the environment, as well as the direct harmful effect of it to community.
