The aim of the project
The aim of this project is to examine fatal consequences of Gölcük and Van earthquakes which are arising from engineering errors.
1999 Gölcük Earthquake
This earthquake, whose eppicenter is Gölcük county in Kocaeli, occured at 03:02 with Turkey time and lasted 45 seconds. According to Richter scale, the magnitude of this earthquake is 7,5 Mw. Furthermore , this earthquake ...view middle of the document...
According to Richter scale, the magnitude of this earthquake is 7,2 Mw and this earthquake occured on Northern Anatolia fault line ,which is one of the world’s largest fault lines. This earthquake took place in 5-16 miles below the earth, was felt primarily in Southern Anatolia, Iran and Northern Iraq, the southeastern border of Turkey. In addition, throughout the recorded history of the Republic, this earthquake is one of the largest earthquakes occured in Anatolia. (NTVMSNBC, 24 October 2011). According to the report, published by Istanbul Technical University, Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management, in October 31st 2011, killed, wounded and debris percentages are as follows.
Yer | Death | Injured | Debris |
Center, Van | 95 (15,8%) | 350 (8,5%) | 10 (0,5%) |
Erciş, Van | 169 (28,1%) | 750 (18%) | 55 (2,4%) |
Other | 337 (56,1%) | 3052 (73,5%) | 2197 (97,1%) |
Total | 601 | 4152 | 2262 |
Utilitarianism, which is a philosophical movement accepts benefit as the basis of the truth. According to Utilitarianism, accuracy of a movement is proportional to the benefits. Although R. Billington defines that benefit of something as its practical usefulness, in exceptional cases, this definition expires. As an example of this issue, consider 1999 Gölcük and 2011 Van earthquakes. For instance, even though it is known that Gölcük is on an important and active fault line, on unsuitable ground projects prepared, and construction were made in order to offer shelter to more people by plenty of engineers. Although this situation ensures that people live as well as homeowners with affordable prices, has led to an increase in loss of life and property, which may occur after natural disasters like earthquakes. In 2011 Van earthquake occurred at similar results have emerged. Van city is located on a layer of alluvium, and its sand structure is composed of gravel, sand on clay made after the previous earthquakes similar results have emerged, as a result of using unsuitable construction materials.
To give a different example, although it is illegal, people constructed unauthorized extra floors. Illegal floors increased the gain of the owner; however, they put at risk the lives of the people who are going to settle there and create a great danger in natural disasters such as earthquakes. We can summarize this subject in the best way by the sentence written by philosopher Hilmi Ziya Ülken ‘’...the ethics based on benefits will collapse when benefits and interest go against each other.’’
All of the methods adapted to our life area correctly are called ‘’duty ethics’’ that we have gained technical skills and knowledge from , in our ‘’education and training life’’ using science and technology. Training and practice professional skills we have gained throughout our educational lives are generally accepted because of being scientific. We do not have any chance to choose...
