Eating out has become a national norm. College students often eat at fast-food establishments because they are convenient, social, and perceived as being low-cost. The purpose of this assignment is to help you become more aware of the nutritional value of restaurant foods. In the first part of the assignment, you will determine your caloric and nutrient recommendations using the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) standards. 2. Calculate your DRI.
a. Take your individual information from above in #1 and enter it into the Interactive DRI for Healthcare Professionals ( Enter each piece of information correctly.
b. Check each DRI nutrient category box (Daily Calorie Needs, All Macronutrients, All Vitamins, and All Minerals). Click on “Submit” at the bottom of the screen. This will bring up your individual estimated calculated Dietary Reference Intake (EER) and other DRIs.
c. Using these numbers (the estimated calculated EER and DRIs), fill-in the information below.
d. The interactive DRI tool will not calculate the estimated saturated fatty acids (SFA), so you’ll need to calculate that on your own (<10% of EER). Take the total EER kcal/day and multiply it by 0.10 (10%) and then divide by 9 kcal/g. Example: 2000 kcal/day x 0.10 = 200 kcal ÷ 9 kcal/kg = 22 grams. The estimated SFA is <22 g/day.
