Today’s economy is truly a global one, allowing a lot more room to maneuver and focus on providing customers with a value product ensuring success. E commerce has made a profound impact on society, people can shop online in the privacy of their own homes without ever having to leave. B2B refers to electronic commerce between businesses rather between a business and a consumer, these type of businesses deal with thousands of other businesses, either as customers or suppliers. E commerce is currently one of the most important aspects of the internet to emerge.
Three areas in which the law is having a significant impact today on e commerce are intellectual property, jurisdiction, and defamation. The law is broad, encompassing local, state, federal, as well as laws from other countries (Mykytyn 2005). There are many worldwide and country specific rules, regulations and laws that govern how websites and in particular e commerece enabled websites should be presented. You have to also consider that there must be ethical responsibility as well when dealing with e commerce. When using e commerce or any type of business online, if your security is weak it may be possible that you are allowing criminals access to information they would not have if security was strong (Mykytyn 2005).
Intellectual property laws generally refer to patents, copyrights, and trademarks, they also provide for a form of legal protection that provides the owner with exclusive rights to its use (Mykytyn 2005). E commerce businesses must use patents for their business, because it is very important to protect your company. A patent is a government authority or license conferring a right or title for a set period, especially the sole right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention. Patents are the most commonly discussed approach today to protecting computer software through patent protection (Mykytyn 2005).
