Much has been said about the differences between registered nurses (RNs) with Baccalaureate degrees (BSN) and those with Associates degrees (ADN). The consensus is that those nurses with BSN degrees are better trained and more skilled nurses. This is a logical assumption to make based on the fact that RNs with BSN degrees have had more education. However, some of that education included general education courses such as art history or economics that are required to fill in undergraduate prerequisites for any bachelor’s degree. Kendall-Gallagher, Aiken, Sloane and Cimiotti (2011) discuss the impact of specialty certification for RNs with either BSN or ADN degrees. In their study, they concluded that years of experience were not a significant factor in positive patient outcomes. They say, “Specialty certification of nurses was also associated with lower mortality and failure to rescue, but only among nurses with BSN or higher education. Mean years of hospital nurse experience was not a significant/ predictor of patient mortality after taking into account education” (Kendall-Gallagher, Aiken, Sloane, & Cimiotti, 2011, pp. 192-193). Apparently, nurses need the years of education to back up the years of experience if patients are to have the best outcomes.
Other research looks at nursing education from a business standpoint. These studies talk about nursing as a value-added characteristic for the healthcare business. Yakusheva, Lindrooth, and Weiss (2014) report, “Identification of baccalaureate education as a characteristic of high value-added nurses, and targeting investments in workforce development to ensure that a complement of high value-added nurses are deployed to direct patient care, could improve patient outcomes and reduce costs of care” (p. 1783). These researchers tie these findings directly to the cost of patient care and use them to lobby federal, state and private healthcare systems to invest in nursing education. Kendall-Gallagher, Aiken, Sloane, and Cimiotti (2011) also draw the same conclusion. “Specialty certification for nurses with BSN and higher education may be a promising investment for improving patient outcomes” (p. 193). While this business approach may be what is needed to encourage government and business sectors to invest in more nursing schools and more funding for people who are willing to take on the challenge of earning a BSN, the true measure of how much the amount of education an RN has matters should be patient care outcomes.
