Research Interest Paper
I am interested in exploring research on the topic of the effects of divorce on children in the United States. In particular I would like to examine if there are significant differences among children that come from divorced families and children that come from intact families in their adulthood. Within this topic I will be specifically looking for any distinctions in terms of relationships in adulthood and the factors that influence any differences.
This idea is interesting because a significant number of people in the United States with children get divorced each year. The immediate impact on children at the time of a divorce is generally taken into account; however, the long-term psychological effects are rarely considered. If there are any significant differences it is something that parents who are thinking of divorcing should take into account. ...view middle of the document...
From the knowledge I have obtained through different sources it can be hypothesized that the negative effects of divorce on children has long-term effects that span well into an individual’s adulthood. I hope in studying this topic further I will be able to learn any trends of the impact of divorce has on children in their adulthood and compare this to an adult from an intact family.
According to Helms & Rogers, research that focuses the impacts of interactions and social environments on human beings is falls under the social psychology subfield. This research topic investigates thoughts, emotions and behaviors of children whom have experienced divorce. It takes into account an individual’s social setting. Based on these defining characteristics this topic could be classified under the subfield of social psychology.
Social psychology is a subfield of substantial interest to me. The fact that social psychology explores various topics that relate to and affect a large segment of the population is particularly appealing. I also enjoy learning how social environments affect human characteristics and their interactions. Overall, through an in depth analysis of examples of social psychology research studies I will be able to establish if it is the right field of psychology to pursue for a future occupation.
Helms & Rogers also mentioned that social psychology has similarities and connections to many other subfields in psychology. This included the counseling psychology subfield. I also have a considerable interest in counseling. Overall, I think that an occupation in the subfield of counseling psychology would be a good fit because I truly enjoy working one on one with others. I also think that I possess many of the qualities needed to be a good counselor such as warmth, patience, self-knowledge, wholeheartedness, good psychological health, trustworthiness, honesty, active responsiveness and sensitivity. By exploring in depth examples of research studies in this subfield of psychology I also believe that I can obtain a clear sense of whether or not to pursue a future career in this subfield.
