Elbow Anatomy

Lateral epicondyle- located on lateral

Elbow Anatomy

Capitulum- lateral side of joint, it
articulates with the radius.

Elbow Anatomy

Trochlea- located on the medial side of
the distal end of the humerus.
Articulates with ulna.

Elbow Anatomy

length.

Common Injuries
Associated With Elbow

wrist flexion or
extension
Elbow contracture

Treatment

Proper equipment
Good warm up with
slow increase in
intensity
Stretching
RICE

Medial Epicondylitis
linked to movements containing
high velocity valgus extension
mechanism
large valgus torque near maximal
external rotation resisted by
a large varus torque generated
by the soft tissue in the elbow

Tennis elbow

lateral epicondylitis -inflammation/microdamage to
tissues on the lateral side of the humerus, 30%40% of tennis players will develop some amount of
this injury
causes include poor technique and equipment

e.g. off-center shots and rackets strung too
tightly

can result in various
fractures or bone
growths.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Common Causes of Compression
When you bend your elbow, the ulnar nerve stretches around the boney ridge
of the medial epicondyle. Because this can irritate the nerve, keeping your
elbow bent for long periods or repeatedly bending your elbow can cause
painful symptoms. For example, many people sleep with their elbows bent.
This can aggravate symptoms of ulnar nerve compression and cause you to
wake up at night with your fingers asleep.
In some people, the nerve slides out from behind the medial epicondyle when
the elbow is bent. Over time, this sliding back and forth may irritate the nerve.
Leaning on your elbow for long periods of time can put pressure on the nerve.
Fluid buildup in the elbow can cause swelling that may compress the nerve.
A direct blow to the inside of the elbow can cause pain, electric shock
sensation, and numbness in the little and ring fingers. This is commonly called
"hitting your...
