Berdasarkan Oxford Companion of English History, Entente cordiale adalah hubungan persahabatan antara Inggris dan Perancis, yang belum berupa Aliansi yang formal. Entente Cordiale pada tahun 1904 adalah sebuah perjanjian bersejarah. Mulai dari Waterloo, Inggris dan Perancis tidak hanya berdamai, tetapi bahkan telah menjadi sekutu dekat. Istilah "Entente Cordiale" pertama kali digunakan untuk menggambarkan persahabatan mereka di tahun 1840-an. Hubungan ini tidak selalu mulus: saling takut dan cemburu yang disebabkan oleh persaingan komersial dan peta politik kekaisaran perubahan Eropa pada abad kesembilan belas. Sikap politisi individu, pendapat pers dan publik, dan interaksi kompleks kekuatan ini sudah menguji ikatan pemahaman hampir pada titik terakhir. Permasalahan akan pembagian Afrika mempersulit kedua negara tersebut untuk mencapai kata sepakat, namun karena adanya inisiatif dari Sekretaris Kolonial Joseph Chamberlain, ada tiga pembicaraan Inggris-Jerman antara 1898 dan 1901. Tetapi, setelah Albert Edward menjadi Raja Edward VII, ia menolak untuk menyetujui Triple Alliance, memutuskan untuk bernegosiasi dengan Jerman. Dan membangkitkan ide aliansi Anglo-Perancis.
Untuk membahas tentang aliansi Anglo-Perancis, Menteri luar negeri Perancis Théophile Delcassé, dan Menteri Luar Negeri Inggris Lord Lansdowne, bertemu untuk menegosiasikan kesepakatan mengenai isu-isu kolonial, dan Lord Lansdowne dan Paul Cambon, Duta Besar Prancis ke Inggris, menandatangani konvensi yang dihasilkan pada tanggal 8 April 1904.
