Biblical Integration: Servant Leadership
Group 3
BUSI 502 – Servant Leadership
Liberty University
2014

Abstract
Biblical Integration: Servant Leadership
Servant leadership teaches that there must be a balance between serving and leading; a focus on putting the needs of others first (Spears, 1996). The philosophy enriches the lives of not only individuals, but builds better organizations by making it a priority to serve others. The greater contributions of quality service exemplify the determination to create an exceptional institution (Greenleaf, 2009). Providing service to communities is one of the primary focuses of a servant leader, which will develop and enhance more ...view middle of the document...

Greenleaf suggested the servant-leader is first a servant, which originates with an inherent desire towards service (1977). Scriptures teach the selfishness of humankind (Romans 3:23; Galatians 5:19-21). The implication is that humankind’s inherent love is for self rather than others. Self-serving leaders reject feedback and the notion of succession since others would have to be their primary focus (Coulter, 2003.
Motivation to help others. Greenleaf measured his motivation to help other by the impact it made on them. His criteria was three-fold: (1) do those served grow as persons; (2) do they become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely to become servants while being served; (3) does the least privileged in society benefit or at least not further deprived (Spears, 2004). This concept resembles Fischer’s covenantal perspective on servant leadership since there appears to be a mutual accountability (Liberty University, Servant leadership). The Scriptures speak to this matter by affirming the servant’s relationship with God and his complete identity in Him (Ephesians 1:13-14; Colossians 2:10). This in turn has the potential to translate into enduring motivation to help others without seeking anything in return, which is the epitome of servant-leadership (Dierendonck, 2011).
Servant-leadership lifestyle. Greenleaf based decision-making on collaboration and community, ethics and concern, professionalism and personal growth rather than an autocratic, hierarchical approach to leadership (Spears, 2004). This concept emphasizes serving the greater needs of others as the primary goal of leadership (Spears, 1996). Coulter asserted the possibility of melding the two values of servant and leader into one person (2003). The Bible affirms that leaders should have a concept of God and lead with an open mind (Matthew 20:25-28).

Gaps in Greenleaf
Temptation. There are many challenges and temptations associated with servant leadership such as a person’s need for recognition or the desire to overwork in order to feed ones ego and sense of accomplishment (Liberty University, Servant leadership). When a leader chooses to place God at the center of their servant leadership approach, that individual can trust that God will never place a temptation or challenge in his path that cannot be overcome (1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV). Life has many temptations that come along, such as the desire for personal recognition that can begin to remove God as our primary focus (Blanchard & Hodges, 2003). To overcome these temptations a servant leader must trust in God where there is safety according to Proverbs 29:25, NJV.
Selfishness. Greenleaf’s thought of inherent desire, which initiates the process of service towards others, is disparate from the Scriptures’ teaching. A desire to serve others is not innate in keeping with a biblical framework, which affirms the selfishness of humanity. The Scriptures repeatedly emphasize that service...
