1) Explain the five broad social and emotional aspects of learning.

The five broad social and emotional areas of learning are:
* Self-awareness
* Managing feelings
* Motivation
* Empathy
* Social skills
Understanding what children can and can’t do at given stages of development is important so that teachers and TAs can be supportive and empathic, so we must look at each area individually.
Self-awareness:
Self-awareness is when a child has some understanding of themselves to enable them to know how to learn, relate to others as well as knowing what they are thinking and feeling.

- To understand that the way they express their feelings can change the way others feel.
- To calm down if angry or sad and knows its ok to seek help from others if struggling.
- To adapt the way they express their feelings in different situations or around different people.
- To manage worries, anger and other feelings by using a range of strategies that they have learnt.
- To change the way they feel by reflecting on their own experiences and review the way they think.
- To know what makes them feel happy and good and are able to encourage and enhance these nice feelings.

Motivation:

A child who is motivated is able to take an active and enthusiastic part in their own learning. This motivation enables the child to recognise and get pleasure from learning and set their own goals, knowing they are able to work towards them. They are able to focus and concentrate, so when they come across some level of difficulty they are able to persist with it.
The child develops independence, resourcefulness and personal organisation.
A motivated child can:
* Set their own challenges and goals, knowing how to break these into smaller achievable steps if needed.
* Overcome problems, set own success criteria and celebrate when they have achieved these.
* Concentrate, resist distraction and understands how to overcome certain feelings which could cause barriers e.g. boredom or frustration.
* Persevere and can move forward after disappointment or if they have made a mistake.
* Evaluate their own learning and then use this to improve their future learning.

Empathy:
For a child to be able to empathise they need to understand others by anticipating and predicting their thoughts, feelings and perceptions.
The child has to be able to see things from another person’s point of view and modify their own response.
When a child develops empathy they can:
* Recognise the feelings of others and know that although everybody has the same feelings, people might experience and show their feelings in different ways.
* Understand another person’s point of view and how they might be feeling, whilst always valuing and respecting their thoughts, feelings, beliefs and values.
* Be supportive to others and help them when they want to.
* Realise that their actions will affect how other people feel – can make them feel better or worse.
Social skills:
Social skills are important to children as they help them to relate to others, enabling them to be part of a team, communicate with others, negotiate, resolve differences and to support the learning of others too.
