Leadership styles can be mainly categorized into three main categories

* Autocratic - Autocratic leadership is an extreme form of transactional leadership, where leaders have absolute power over their workers or team. Staff and team members have little opportunity to make suggestions, even if these would be in the team's or the organization's best interest

Organisations in the government sector for instance are likely to be resistant to change and hence a democratic style of approach is more effective to get the participation of the staff and make them feel part of the change. Using autocratic or laissez-faire style in such scenarios might result in staff feeling forced into accepting changes or too relaxed in executing tasks which might result in staff turnovers or loss of control.
* Nature of the task – Tasks which require coordination, direction or structure could also influence a particular type of leadership style. Tasks like initiatives for cost cutting techniques, fund raising ideas etc. which require full participation from team members will be more effective if a democratic style of leadership is chosen where an autocratic style would be more appropriate when dealing with emergency situations like fire breakout, human causalities etc.

So based on the above factors depending on the situations the leadership styles may be a choice between autocratic, democratic or Laissez-Faire.

One of the types of leadership style is called autocratic were leaders rely on the power behind their position and take control over eg: decision making and giving instructions. There are positives and negatives in using such leadership style. Since the leader makes all the decision himself, it facilitates in faster decision making. Also as the leader continuously monitors his subordinates such style can lead to successful completion of projects. It also provides motivation to the leader as he can exercise full control over the team and their activities. The negative effect of such a leadership style is that the subordinates do not have any role in the decision making process which eventually can result in demotivation and alienation. Such leadership styles could also result in a high turnover and absenteeism at work.

Another type of leadership is called democratic which is the most commonly and frequently used styles in organisations. In a democratic leadership style, the leader seeks to achieve consensus on what should be done, how it should be done and the resources need along with providing support and expertise as well encouraging the team members to make their own decisions. As with other leadership styles this style also has its positives and negatives. This type of style requires the team members’ participation in making decisions which improves the teams’ involvement in the projects as well as motivates them. It also...
