Course Goals and Learning Objectives: The goal of this course is to provide students a practitioner’s perspective on financial statement analysis. The course will emphasize thinking beyond the text and will focus to how to critically examine financial statement information and management representations. The course will primarily focus on financial statements prepared in accordance with US GAAP, however differences between US GAAP and IFRS will be outlined and examined. The class will be taught using a combination of lectures, class discussions and real-world case studies. Students will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the selected company. Additionally students must identify a minimum of two and a maximum of four direct or indirect competitors to the subject company. After conducting the analysis, students must make an investment recommendation regarding the subject company relative to its direct or indirect competitors. Mid-Term Exam (Exam 1): Exam 1 will cover the lecture material and subjects explored in case studies during the first three weeks of class. Prepare for a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions (2/3rds of the exam) along with short essay response questions (1/3rd of the exam). A study session will be scheduled during Week 3 of the course. Final Exam: The Final Exam will cover the lecture materials and subjects explored in case studies during the entire course. The Final Exam will be a mix of multiple-choice questions and written response questions, along with some case-study type exercises. A study session will be scheduled ruing Week 6 of the course.
