“Leadership is a process of developing ideas and a vision, living by values that support those ideas and that vision, influencing others to embrace them in their own behaviors, and making hard decisions about human and other resources” (Hallriegal & Jr. Slocum, 2011, p. 4). Leadership is an important concept and it all starts with the leader.

This shows that Mulally is considerate and he cares about how his employees feel. Team building is important to him, Mulally doesn’t want to deal with arguing among his employees or settling any arguments between executives, he feels that they can work together or come see him. Mulley initiates structure by holding weekly meetings, and setting goals for his team to meet. He has set clear goals and he expects them to be met.
Consideration and initiating structure can occur at the same time at different intervals such as high consideration or low initiating structure or vice versa. However leaders who have high initiating structure and low consideration typical have issues such as high turnover rates, grievances etc. Having both high consideration and high initiating structure seems to be more beneficial for leaders. Goal setting is one of the most important tools affecting the performance of employees in organizations. Goal setting is important especially since the market has become more of a competitive environment. Goal setting has four motivational factors: goals direct attention, goals regulate effort, goals increase persistence and goals foster strategies and action programs (Hallriegal & Jr. Slocum, 2011). Goals have helped improve Ford’s performance because it is clear to the employees what level of performance is expected from them. Mulally has made the goals for the company clear by creating a plastic card with four goals on one side and the revised definition of the company on the either side.
