Foundation of Opportunity

Teaching is the only profession that teaches all other professions. Without teachers the nation would not have doctors or judges; it would, however, have criminals and uneducated humans. Teachers go beyond the classroom and into the hearts of students; a teacher affects eternity changing the world one kid at a time. From the age of five I have known I wanted to be a teacher, and have never questioned it. Carrying out the ambitious personality I have, I intend to make a difference in the world, whether that means helping one person or helping thousands. The ghetto lacks government funding and acknowledgement that people are trying to lead a productive life, this is discrimination. In a perfect world humans are to be treated equal and given the same chances as everyone else. It is my aspiration to afford others the same opportunities that have been given to me. I am conscious that I can achieve this anywhere I venture. However, I am from a small conservative town, where everyone is hospitable and endearing to everyone. Nonetheless, I treasure the town, it is safe and comforting. Conversely though, that is why I wish to leave. I want to see all aspects of life, from the wholesome to the repulsive parts. That is one of the many reasons I wish to teach in the under developed part of towns, I want to take off my rose colored glasses and see what the rest of the world is like.

Throughout my childhood adults have always asked me the question, “what do you want to do when you grow up?” This remark never made me think, I always had the same robotic answer for them, a teacher. It was not until seventh grade that this inquiry changed my perspective on life. One day in my computer science class my teacher, Mr. Reeder overheard the conversation I was having with a friend regarding career choices. I made the comment, “well do you have any idea what you want to do when you grow up?” and before my friend could answer, Mr. Reeder chimed in, “Mallory, it’s not what you want to do; it’s who you want to be.” I was left baffled; never once had it occurred to me that my career choice could be considered irrelevant.
