Functions of Management
In today’s high paced business world following the four functions of management is fundamental to keep up with the constant change of pace. The four traditional functions of management are: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (Bateman & Snell, 2009). The four functions are a major key element in new organizations and in established organizations. When a manager tries to run a successful business without using the four functions it can lead to total dysfunction within the organization. According to Bateman and Snell (2009) “Organizing is assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals” (p. 20). A manager has to make sure that there are enough employees to cover shifts and this requires organizing enough employees to cover all departments. If a manager fails to organize the workforce effectively, then the organization will not only suffer but also the customers will suffer because of the lack of employees. When a workplace is unorganized, the manager will seem unprepared and employees may lose respect for the managers’ supervisory techniques.
When a person takes on a management role in an organization obviously leadership skills are a must. A manager must be able to stimulate high-performance by employees (Bateman& Snell, 2009). Leading takes place in many aspects of organizations such as in teams, departments, and divisions and even at the very top of large organizations. As a manager a person must be able to motivate and empower people (Bateman& Snell, 2009). A manager needs to discover what motivates his or her employees and use it to inspire the employees to reach the organizations goals. When a manager is efficient at leading employees, goals are met on time.
