Generational Diversity in the Workplace
With the current state of the economy, many people are being forced to delay their plans of retirement and remain in the workforce. Due to this, it is not uncommon to have distinct generational groups in one work environment simultaneously. There are four generations currently represented in the workforce: Matures, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Generation Yers (Mathis & Jackson, 2011). Each generation has been exposed to different world events and experiences that have served to shape their worldview and the way they approach tasks. These individuals are more likely to focus on family and quality of life. They tend to be practical and realistic, have learned to be self-reliant and easily adapt to change. They have embraced technology and are more fiscally conservative than those of the Baby Boomer generation. Workers of this generation are often considered poor team players due to their self-reliance leading them to do things themselves rather than waiting on a working group. They are highly educated and tend to prefer working for an organization that allows them to advance at a rapid pace, provides frequent feedback, and supplies a work environment that allows them to build on their skill set (Patterson, 2007).
Generation Yers were born between 1981 and 2000 (Mathis & Jackson, 2011). They have never experienced a world without technology. They are idealistic with high expectations, they view connecting with others as involving instant responses, expect frequent feedback, and value innovation and change. Yers enjoy being mentored and learning from others which sometimes leads other generations to view them as dependent and unmotivated (Patterson, 2007).
In order for a business to compete successfully with its competitors, it must properly build upon the strengths of its workforce, including the varied strengths across generations.
