Global Warming: Fact or Fiction
According to the New York Times, “Global warming has become perhaps the most complicated issue facing world leaders”. The debate on Global ...view middle of the document...
The emission of burnt fossil fuels including coal, gasoline, oil, and natural gas raises the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Increases of methane and nitrous oxide are caused my farming practices and land use changes. Deforestation also contributes to the greenhouse gases because trees use carbon dioxide and emit oxygen in its place. We cut down the trees for farming or construction, this cause an increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere which helps increase greenhouse gases. Lastly population increases contribute to the greenhouse effect because more people are using more fossil fuels for transportation, heat and manufacturing thereby increasing the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
One of the government agencies that monitor the greenhouse effect is NOAA. NOAA stands for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In the process of monitoring, they have devised 7 indicators which that would expect to increase in a warming world and 3 that would expect to decrease in a cooling world. These include temperatures of air, land and sea as well as temperature over the oceans, troposphere temperature, humidity and ocean heat content. Another agency that monitors the greenhouse effect is the EPA which stands for Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA has been monitoring the greenhouse effect for several years under the direction of the White House.
The two main indicators each agency has discovered is that the increase of the burning of fossil fuels have been the main contributor to the increase of greenhouse gases and that carbon dioxide while being less potent than other gases is the most significant one and has increased tremendously over the last decade. This is due to many different factors the greatest being deforestation.
Global warming has been a topic of discussion among many people including scholars, politicians, and scientist. There are many facts and fictions floating about concerning this topic. Where you find answers can be as frustrating as cutting your lawn with a pair of scissors. There are hundreds and hundreds of websites dealing with this subject. I have researched quite a few of them and still have to rely on my on common sense to filter out what is what. So far as facts are concerned, this is what I know to be true.
1. Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases being retained in the earth’s atmosphere.
2. Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and water vapors make up greenhouse gases with carbon dioxide being the most important.
3. Human beings contribute to global warming by the burning of fossil fuels such as natural gases, oils,...
