Global Warming Alert
Former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Al Gore, has been speaking up about global warming for the last decade and presenting his DVD documentary on global warming. Based on the documentary, global warming is the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s air and oceans causing the destruction of the atmosphere and ozone layer. The Apollo 8 space mission was the first mission into space that had taken a picture of earth from space. The result of this picture was astonishing to the scientific and environmental community. This made them research what global warming is and the effects of it.
Did you know that the atmosphere is very vulnerable? Pollution thickens up the atmosphere called the greenhouse effect. One of Al Gore’s college professors found out that there is a mass of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere called CO2. The way they ...view middle of the document...
Did you know that the majority of the continents are above the equator? Since all the continents are above the equator, most of the vegetation is above the equator; therefore most of the pollution and CO2 comes from above the equator. They started to measure CO2 in the atmosphere back in 1958 and found that CO2 increases every year. They were able to find this information by using a core drill. A core drill drills through the ice cap in either Antarctica or other large ice caps. It drills a three yard long and two inch diameter circle and pulls out the ice to create a hole. The way that they were able to determine the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was by testing the ice that had fallen in that year.
What is happening to the ice caps on Greenland, Antarctica, or the Artic Circle when they start to melt? It starts with the melting of land base ice and sea base ice. Due to the radiation from the sun, sea base ice that is already in the ocean does not rise to sea level. When the radiation from the sun melts the land base ice (glaciers), the sea level rises. In approximately 75 years or more and if the environment remains the same as it is today, the greenhouse gases will trap in so much radiation that Greenland and half of Antarctica will melt away. This would cause a world wide flood and would leave 1.3 billion people around the coasts of various continents homeless. For example, Florida could potentially be underwater.
Global warming would affect me by affecting the climate and seasons. If global warming is not addressed, it could cause the destruction of the ozone layer. It has created more new diseases in the last quarter of a century than any other century. At least thirty of the diseases would normally be killed in the cold temperatures, but now because of global warming most of them stay in warm conditions and never die off. This has been the start of potentially many mass epidemics. Global warming is a very important factor in the world today that should not be taken lightly. I would like to thank Al Gore for his documentary and helping me understand the importance of Global warming.
