As some health care professions, such as allied health and supportive services like medical records technicians and physical therapists, exhibit a tremendous growth in supply other professions can expect to see a further decline. It is expected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the projected growth for the health care workforce, the largest industry in the United States, will create an estimated three million jobs within ten years time (Hernandez & O’Connor, 2009).
Identify the persistent causes of health workforce shortages at various training levels.
The health care industry is by far the largest growing industry. A growing demand to meet the needs of a growing and aging population and increased illness and disease has increased a demand for medical care. Example of when shortage comes into play includes when the demand is not met with equal or more supply and an inability to retain staffing because of issues such as compensation and training. The supply of health care personnel such as nurses has been inadequate and unequal to that of the demand of health care needs (Zywiak, 2013). It is estimated that by 2025 the shortage of nurses will be hovering around half a million followed by a 46,000 shortage of primary care physicians. The demand for health care professionals is expected to increase even more with a new influx of consumers with whom medical coverage has been provided with the Affordable Health Act (Wood, 2013).
