Hakekat Musik

Setiap saat, kita selalu bersinggungan dengan musik. Baik bermain alat musik, menikmati nyanyian, hingga bersiul. Manusia tidak pernah luput dari musik. Meskipun setiap saat bersentuhan dengan musik, sulit untuk dijelaskan secara definitif apa yang dimaksud dengan musik? Secara informal kita memahami bahwa musik adalah suatu kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan nada yang juga menyebabkan rasa menyenangkan bagi kita. Namun secara formal, sulit sekali memberikan definisi umum yang dapat disepakati oleh semua pengkaji musik, pakar estetika, hingga para filosof. Perkembangan musik, dari zaman pra-sejarah, zaman kuno, abad pertengahan, renaisans, klasik, hingga kontemporer, menunjukan betapa berperannya musik dalam kehidupan manusia. Musik tidak sekedar menjadi hiburan, tetapi medium religiusitasnya, ekspresi eksistensinya, dan yang terpenting, instrumen komunikasi antar subjek.
Musik dan Emosi
Disaat hati senang, kita selalu mencari representasi perasaan kita di dalam musik, begitu juga dikala sedih, kita menyanyikan lagu dengan harapan memahami emosi yang tengah kita lalui. Begitu juga kita disaat mendengarkan musik tertentu, yang dengan mudahnya dapat membuat kita terbawa emosi, baik perasaan bahagia, patriotis, marah, sedih, malu, hingga bangga. Pesan yang tersirat di dalam partitur, atau bait lagu dapat dengan mudahnya kita pahami. Inilah kekuatan dari musik. Bahwa musik adalah ekspresi jujur emosi seseorang.
Dalam film Immortal Beloved, dikisahkanlah kehidupan Ludwig Van Beethoven dan bagaimana emosi yang ia rasakan menjelma di dalam musiknya. Beethoven adalah salah satu musisi transisional, dari zaman musik klasik, menuju era Romantik. Ciri khas dari musik Beethoven adalah komposisi yang abstrak, tanpa terlalu mematuhi pola komposisi di masa klasik. Penekanan utamanya adalah simfoni yang berkisah tentang emosi mendalam yang dihadapi oleh seseorang. Karya-karya Beethoven yang seringkali mengeksplorasi paduan kord-kord yang tidak biasa, menunjukan bagaimana musik tidak harus menurut pada suatu peraturan. Musik adalah simbol kebebasan, tujuan terpentingnya adalah penyampaian emosi tersebut.
Dalam On Aesthetic, Schopenhauer menulis, “Music is the true universal language which is understood everywhere, so that it is ceaselessly spoken in all countries and throughout all the centuries with great zeal and earnestness”
Musik adalah bahasa universal. Beethoven meyakini bahwa musiknya bertutur dengan bahasa yang dapat dipahami oleh siapapun. Salah satu contoh ilustrasi yang ditunjukan di dalam film bagaimana musik menjadi ekspresi emosi Beethoven. Dalam dialognya dengan sahabatnya Schindler ia berkata “Music is a dreadful thing, what is it? I do not understand it. What is it do? It is the power of music, it is like hypnotism” Lalu sebagai demonstrasi musik sebagai bahasa untuk bercerita, ia menjelaskan tentang Kreutzer Sonata. Bagaimana ia berusaha menyampaikan emosi kekesalannya karena tertunda menemui kekasihnya, “This is the sound of his agitation”
Meskipun keakuratan historis film The Immortal Beloved masih diperdebatkan, hal ini tidak menghalangi penikmat film untuk menginterpretasikan kisah-kisah dibalik simfoni dan sonata dari Beethoven. Berkaitan dengan kekesalan Beethoven yang gagal menemui kekasihnya, ia menuliskan di dalam suratnya untuk The Immortal Beloved.
