Video games are a form of entertainment created around late 1960s and beginning of 1970s. The effects of violence in video games on negative behavior has been widely studied and debated. In the United States, Europe, and Japan, there are more than 130,000 gamers from elementary school to college. (Jayson 1) This controversial topic has become a serious issue after numerous senseless shootings occurred and particularly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. Video games are played in more than 2/3 of United States households. (Biskupic 1) The average player is at his game console for 400 hours annually. (Schlafly 1) The standard age of a gamer is 30 and 47% of these gamers are females. (Guarino 2) Only 7 of the top 20 video games are based on violence. Most video games that children find enjoyable are ones based on cartoons or dance, such as “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” and “Just Dance.” In “Just Dance”, you dance along with the dance routines on the screen and receive a score on how well you followed the dance moves. Each dance is about 3 to 4 minutes long and gives you a break between each song. Most adolescent gamers find this game more entertaining than any violent video game.
Laws have been passed to try and prevent younger children from purchasing violent video games. Leland Yee, California State Senator in District 8, sponsored a state ban in California on the sale of violent video games to minors. (Biskupic 1) This eventually became law in 2005. On June 20, 2009, Gareth Schott, a psychiatrist, held a study to witness teenagers playing video games. (“It’s Just a Game” 2) His study has been funded by a $140,000 Marsden Fast Start grant. He wishes to help develop a more meaningful way to talk about games to teens. On December 18, 2012, Jay Rockefeller, the senior United States Senator from West Virginia, introduced a bill to have the National Academy of Sciences examine the links between violent video games and violence in children. (Guarino 2) Rockefeller introduced the bill before the end of the last Congress's term but ran out of time to get a floor vote. (“Sen. Jay Rockefeller Reintroduces Bill Calling for Video Game Research” 1) On January 25th, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and other member of the video game industry were to meet with Vice-President Joe Biden as part of his efforts related to gun violence. There has yet to be any results of their meeting.
Violent video games simulate the killing of human beings, which is an inappropriate lesson to demonstrate to children. It is morally wrong to teach a child to kill someone in order to proceed in winning a game. (McCartney 2) Killing innocent people in video games shouldn’t be considered a free right of speech. (Schlafly 1)There is no reason for someone to find violent video games enjoyable. It is unacceptable that murdering a person in a game is being used for a child’s amusement. (McCartney 2) They are corrupting their view of the way they see themselves and other human beings. Video games usually place the player as the offender in a game, not someone who would stop one of these wrongdoings. The player plays in the position of a gang member, murderer, a street thug, a drug dealer, or pimp. These characters begin to represent the fantasy of little boys that don’t know their place in society yet. They look to the character as a role model.
