Problem Solution: Harrison-Keyes Inc.
Harrison Keyes, Inc. has a few problems that need to be dealt with. One of the problems is production related. The implementation plan called for some overseas outsourcing to cut some costs. Asia Digital Publishing is not working out for the company. Another problem that exists is the reluctance of the authors to move in the direction that the company is looking for. The e-commerce software that the company had planned on using to sell the e-books directly from the Web site is not functioning properly. This will delay the launch of the sales Web site. There are two main bodies of this information that management/leadership needs: internal perspectives from management and employees on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; and external information from markets, customers, suppliers, competitors, and other sources. In an organization where there is faith in the abilities of formal leaders, employees will look towards the leaders for a number of things. During drastic change times, employees will expect effective and sensible planning, confident and effective decision-making, and regular, complete communication that are timely. During these times of change, employees will perceive leadership as supportive, concerned and committed to their welfare, at the same time recognizing that tough decisions need to be made. The best way to summarize is that there is a climate of trust between leader and the rest of the team. The existence of this trust brings hope for better times in the future, and that makes coping with drastic change much easier. (Bacal, 2005). In organizations characterized by poor leadership, employees expect nothing positive. In a climate of distrust, employees learn that leaders will act in indecipherable ways and in ways that do not seem to be in anyone's best interests. Poor leadership means an absence of hope, which, if allowed to go on for too long, results in an organization becoming completely nonfunctioning. The organization must deal with the practical impact of unpleasant change and must labor under the weight of employees who have given up, have no faith in the system or in the ability of leaders to turn the organization around. Leadership before, during and after change implementation is the key to getting through the swamp. Unfortunately, if the organization has not established a track record of effective leadership, by the time companies have to deal with difficult changes, it may be too late. (Bacal, 2005). The role of the project manager in project management is a huge responsibility. It is the project manager's job to direct and supervise the project from beginning to end. Here are some other roles: (a) The project manager must define the project, reduce the project to a set of manageable tasks, obtain appropriate and necessary resources, and build a team or teams to perform the project work, (b) The project manager must set the final goal for the project and must motivate his workers to complete the project on time, (c) A project manager must have is technical skills. This relates to financial planning, contract management, and managing creative thinking and problem-solving techniques are promoted and (d) No project ever goes 100% as planned, so project managers must learn to adapt to change. There are many things that can go wrong with project management. These are commonly called barriers. Here are some possible barriers:
