Although service users have a right’s and responsibilities for example around choice they must be able to make an informed choice. In the case of my service user who has a preferred interest in food he may wish to go out for meals however he can become agitated and present challenging behavior if he has to wait for long periods of time. The dilemma can come from trying to balance the individual’s right to eat in a restaurant and our duty to preserve their dignity and protect them and member of the public from harm. in my service we provide active support in helping the individual choose a suitable place to eat in our case a carvery which at quiet times removes the wait time which causes the challenging behavior and still allows the individual to enjoy their preferred activity. This can also cause a dilemma between myself and other staff members as values as I believe the individual has the right to take part in this activity where it is safe to do so however other staff members can be more reluctant and in some cases refuse to carry out the activity This dilemma can extend to the professional values of others it is one thing to be reluctant to take the individual out it is another refuse and to make decisions for the individual without their consent. as this will ultimately remove service users choice we also must assess any risks to the sevice user staff or members of the public in the form of risk assesments which are written before any activity is part of my key working role I have a monthly meeting with my service user this is to assess what the individual needs from their support and what they want to happen this is achieved by sitting with the service user in a support setting and having an informal meeting which is arranged prior to the day of the meeting so that the service user can have time to process that this will happen and also have time to prepare a list of things they want to bring to the meeting this is sometimes in the form of a document called “what I need” or (WIN) this allows the idividual to activley participate in the planning proccess and take ownership of their supportduring this meeting they are asked to fill out a short form (dependant on ability) which is used to ask if they are happy with their support and if they know who to speak to if they need to complain about any aspect of their support.every month I attend a team meeting in which my collegues and I discuss how the service and service users are progressing. this involves input from keyworkers and management as well as other staff members who work with the service users support plans and stratagies that can be used to support the individual to lead as independent a life as possible we also use this time to discuss changes of plan implementation and any health concernsthis time is also used to provide feedback on the individuals care and support plans and wether we need to change the way they are implemented during this time we also...
