According to Hicks and Nicols (2012), health communication specialists play a variety of roles, including, but not limited to, developing health prevention and promotion campaigns, serving as advocates for patient and consumer groups, educating members of Congress about health issues, handling health crises (p. 11, Chapter 1). I am the communications coordinator for a national drug manufacturer. Lewis (2011) reports, “Online channels are popular for administrative tasks like appointment setting and billing, but patients vastly prefer traditional communications when consulting with doctors, according to Capstrat poll.” Disadvantages would be the timing for the communication may not be right or the sender and receiver are not be prepared for the communication process.
Technology has allowed communication between people to happen within seconds. People can talk and see each other at the same time. It almost seems like we are living in the cartoon character George Jetson’s world! du Pré (2005) states some advantages of electronic communication are feedback and response are obtained quickly, information is available when consumers need or want it, large amounts of information is easily stored, can be replayed, or forwarded, and interactive information makes it highly memorable and engaging (p. 322, Chapter 11). Some disadvantages to electronic communication for health care communication are not everyone has access or access for people with visual disabilities are limited, the contents may not be helpful, or the viewer can not touch or watch other human beings, which limits nonverbal feedback and may add to people’s sense of isolation (du Pré , 2005).
The advantages of using social media for health are communication are Wipro Technologies reports medical organizations use social media for recruiting, obtaining customer ratings and feedback, introducing new services and patient education, and awareness creation. They go on to state, “60 million Americans exchanged their medical experiences online with each other last year, almost 72 % of patients searched for online information before or after a doctor visit, and 890 hospitals in the US used social media to engage with their patients” (2010). Disadvantages to social media are not all information put on websites is reputable and with blogging, opinions are just that, opinions. In addition, each health encounter is different from one another, so a person cannot assume that something they are experiencing is exactly like another person’s experience.
