Levels of Health Promotion

Health promotion is essential in keeping society and individuals healthy. Health promotion empowers communities and individuals for healthy living through education. The primary goal of health promotion is prevention. Nurses are key in health promotion and will be seen in diverse settings as health promotion evolves the nursing profession. There are three levels to health promotion that are utilized to optimize health.

Nurses are vital for health promotion. When nurses lead the care outcomes are positive. It has been found that patient’s adhere better to health plans when nurses are involved. There is improved quality of life, patients have a better understanding of their disease, and improved self- directed care when nurses lead the care (Kelecher, Parker, Abdulwadud, Francis, 2009).
Evolution of Nursing Roles in Health Promotion
The Accountable Care Act and the Healthy People 2020 report are influential in creating a shift in the health care setting. With the health reform swaying from the acute care setting to the primary care setting health promotion is going to be crucial for the success of the reform. Health promotion will be the vanguard of nursing care. Nursing interventions will be based more on health promotion than disease management.
In response to the reform nurses will be seen in diverse settings such as community nursing, health departments, schools, parishes, and occupational health programs. The health nurse in these setting will be required to collaborate with a multi-discipline approach. This multi-discipline approach requires the nurse to engage in many roles.

Nursing Roles
The nurse researcher will be essential in health promotion. With health promotion based on evidence it will be necessary for the nurse to have an understanding of the research process. Research enhances patient outcomes and should be the focus for clinical judgement.
Education is key for the success of health promotion. Nurse educators teach clients to empower themselves by taking control and make changes for better quality of life by changing behaviour. For a nurse to be a successful educator they must have an understanding of the learning-teaching process.
Case managers are essential in health promotion. Case managers collaborate with a team to ensure the patient is getting the best care and that the care is cost efficient. Case managers help connect patients with needed resources.

There are three levels to health promotion that help the nurse create change in the individual and community.
Primary Promotion
