One thing we know for sure, the young generations today has greater risk from certain drinking habits. They are more prone to peer pressure among their group of friends or even within the family. They are more likely to drink alcohol and develop bad drinking behaviors. The cultural background also has had a huge impact on the young Marshallese kids. Parents, nowadays, are not that strict as they used to be back in the days. Even though there is an age limit on when a person can drink, that doesn’t stop the kids from experimenting. Although it is legal for those aged 18 and over to buy and drink alcohol, that doesn’t mean it’s any less powerful than other drugs. Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows down your body's reactions and responses in all kinds of ways. Just enough can make you feel sociable, confident and happy; too much and you may not even remember what you did and too much alcohol can even put you in a coma or get you killed.
Alcohol use can progress into abuse. It can slowly creep into our lives that a person often don’t realize that their drinking has become a problem.
Alcoholism is a chronic and often progressive disease that includes problems controlling your drinking, being controlled by drinking, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the same effect (addiction), or having withdrawal symptoms when you all of a sudden decrease or stop drinking. If you have alcoholism, you can't consistently predict how much you'll drink, how long you'll drink, or what consequences will occur from your drinking. All we think about and know is that alcohol tastes good and it makes you feel good all over, that’s what alcoholism is. It clouds your judgement on what is right and what is wrong. As long as you feel good inside and that you are happy, it doesn’t matter if people around you, including your loved ones, are sadden or affected by your actions.
Binge drinking can also lead to alcoholism. It means a male and female consumes four or more drinks in a row which can lead to the same health risks and social problems as alcoholism.
It is also possible to have a problem with alcohol, even when it has not progressed into alcoholism. Problem drinking means you drink too much at times, causing the same problems in your life, even though you are not fully dependent on alcohol, by doing this so often, you have a drinking problem.
If a person have alcoholism, it won’t be easy to stop or cut back on alcohol. It takes time and professional help to guide you slowly, but surely to becoming sober. Denying that you have alcoholism, however, will not help your situation, but instead worsen it. You can only be helped, if you want to get help and if you want to beat alcoholism.
The Effects On the citizens of the Marshall Islands:
I may not be a Marshallese by blood, both my sister and I was born and raised here. I’ve seen and observed what effects alcohol has on the Marshallese people. I’ve even seen my sister and her friends get drunk. Even though, my sister would get in trouble, for some reason, the next day, she will sneak out and do it again. No matter what our parents would do to punish her, it didn’t matter to her. Alcohol was what mattered to her. I saw how she would act when she’s under the influence of it. She used to have all A’s in school, but when alcohol entered her life, her grades started to drop. I didn’t understand what was going on then, but as I did my research for this essay, I realized that my...
