The earliest style of Heavy Metal is Thrash Metal formed in the early '80s. In short, it is an acceleration of Heavy Metal, faster and harsher. It is essentially dominated by racing guitar and aggressive vocal. Each Thrash songs is often technically accomplished, taken at fast tempo. More and more guitar techniques and dexterity were required as Thrash became more and more intricate with impromptu guitar solos. Despite the lack of airplay, Thrash occupied the music world in the mid 80's and until the early '90s. It provided instrument players a vast playground to show off their talents and creativities.Death Metal grew out of Thrash Metal in the late '80s, took the darkest subject matters of Thrash. Its lyric is always full of anger and crazy, unhealthy ideas. Opposite with Thrash Metal, Doom Metal developed from Heavy Metal in the mid '80s as murky dirges with lumbering guitar and sluggist groaning vocal. Doom is always very pessimistic and depressing about death, pain and suffering. Later Doom combined with Death for the gowling vocal, but still keep the slow tempo and sorrow.Goth Metal emerged in the mid and late '80s, inherited a lot from Goth Rock. The first thing we can feel when listening to Goth songs is the florid poetry, sorrow and that they are vaguely medieval. Sonically, the music uses many thick-sound instruments such as piano, violin, violoncello etc. Technical, processed guitar together with melancholy piano and violin, in a complex structure, build up Goth, not too cruel like Black or Death Metal, but not less horror either. In its early days, Goth was usually introspective, but soon its topics expanded to literary romanticism, morbidity, religious symbolism, supernatural mysticism, etc. Goth's lyrics are the most poetic in the Metal World.Power Metal crystallized in the early and mid '90s. It was, actually, a reaction against the harshness and lack of melody in Death and Black Metal. The noticeable characteristic of Power Metal is the grandiose and pseudo-classical ambition. Power Metal bands borrow the the background sound of orchestras, or more often try to build up this background by some electric instruments like keyboard, then combine it with a high vocal to make up imposing epics often relating myths or legends in praise of heroism and courage. Power Metal gains a great respect from fans thanks to the harmonization of the grandeur of the orchestra and the powerfulness of Metal.New Metal is the latest style forming in the late '90s. Actually, it is a combination or Metal and Rap / Hip Hop. Singer both rap and sing on the background of Heavy Metal sound. New Metal bands often use turntables - an instrument of DJs. Although considered less technical, New Metal is also famous among young fans for their realism. It portrays real life directly and straightforward, often youth life.
