Humanities Speech
The Revolution of 1911

Dear brothers and sisters of China, I highly appreciate this pleasant greeting with which you are honoring me today. Like I once said, “The Revolution has not yet succeeded. Comrades, you must carry on!” We don’t have what we want; we must continue to battle, until our government weakens, until they make a concession. The time has come for the country to change; the time has come for us to stand up for ourselves and fight for what truly belongs to us; the time has come for us to fight for freedom, for democracy.

Change is necessary! Do you want to continue to live under the Manchurians? Under the Ch’ing emperor? Do you want to ...view middle of the document...

Why do women have to suffer bound feet? Why doesn’t the government stop this cruel tradition? Why do parents have to maim their daughters so that they can marry well? Do you really want to live in this brutal society? Why do we choose to live in a country where we can’t choose how we look, what we wear, what we learn; is this what we want? When we have freedom we can choose what we wear, how we look. Our lives won’t be forfeited because we don’t follow unfair rules. Our human rights would be protected; we would have the right to live. So I stand here and stress once again, if you want a brighter future, stand with me and fight for our rights and for democracy!

The first step in our revolution is to get rid of the old system, to get rid of the old government. While trying to disintegrate the government, we must begin to plan a new system, thinking about some elements like how we should run the country; what policies we should use; who should rule the country. These components are very significant, because if we are not organized and well planned, when the revolution succeeds, the country will still be in chaos, since there will be no one to lead us through the hardest time we will ever experienced. The one who will show the way to a bright future has to have good leadership skills, as well as the understanding of what the citizens need; in addition, he must be able to put the benefits of the people first and not his own. We should protest for change peacefully. We should talk the government into coming over to our way of thinking and helping China to change. However, if the government doesn’t care and if they start the violence, in the interest of protecting ourselves, we MUST fight back.

If we are to accomplish a revolution, we must stand up for what we want, we must fight for democracy, for freedom. As I said when I spoke to you earlier, “An individual should not have too much freedom. A nation should have absolute freedom.” The government shouldn’t be...
