Examining the Use of Social Media: Option 1
Question 1: What are the advantages and disadvantages of social media?
Social media is a popular and powerful media form that attracts a widespread audience. These days, it seems that most everyone has a social network site account (and often numerous accounts). Social media is extremely popular with both individual users and with businesses. There are many benefits to social media use; however, there are some disadvantages as well.
Social media sites are often comparable to traditional “word of mouth” communication. They make the exchange of information convenient for individuals, groups, and businesses. Social media sites have their own pros and cons, but all these sites serve this information sharing purpose. Facebook, one of the most popular social networking sites, allows users to share information in many forms (audio, images, text, video). Twitter gives users the opportunity to ...view middle of the document...
Some individuals will make use of a user’s information to “Facebook stalk” him or her. Twitter allows quick information sharing, but it is rather limited as to the amount of information that can be shared at one time. YouTube is ideal for video sharing, but it lacks the usefulness through diversity of Facebook.
There are many advantages and disadvantages of social media, and knowledge of these aspects can help any user make the most out of this form of communication.
Question 2: How might knowing these advantages and disadvantages alter how a person uses social media?
Once aware of social media advantages and disadvantages, users can then make use of social media in the most beneficial way possible. An informed Facebook user can use this site to keep track of family and friends from various parts of the world, and they also have the option to easily find new Facebook friends. A knowledgeable user also takes care with the information he or she shares to prevent “Facebook stalking.” An informed and considerate user can also avoid participating in the gossip and rumors spread by “Facebook drama.” Twitter users should keep in mind that the up to the minute information availability should be used but not abused. There is no point in sharing every minute detail of daily life as this could annoy a user’s “followers.” Businesses looking for an easy and effective way to promote the company and their products have made profitable use of social media. Many new and well established companies have Facebook pages (sometimes even instead of a standard website) to expose users to the company in a cost effective and extremely successful way. YouTube is not only a source of entertainment for many individuals through the popularity of “viral videos,” but it also is a useful source of advertising for many companies. This site is perfect for posting previews and commercials of new films and television shows, and many successful companies have taken notice of this. Social media, like any other media form, has its advantages and disadvantages. The knowledge of these elements allows all users (individuals, collectives, companies, etc.) to capitalize on the positive aspects while avoiding the negative.
