The role of food and recipes in Like Water for Chocolate by: Laura Esquivel
From the time of Adam and eve, food is always a very essential need of human life. Due to good or bad eating habits and the difference in human body sizes is always noted. Eating a lot does not guarantee good health as eating balanced diet. Many individual eat certain groups of foods mostly due to their cultures, backgrounds, geographic locations and also the economic status of their families and their ethnic groups. Unlike other human essentials, food preserves cultures as different cultures are associated with various foods. For instance, in a gathering that has people from various ...view middle of the document...

Food acts as a remembrance of ancient history, mainly the history that is always kept fresh by food is that of popular family cooks who had existed a long time ago and their history of cooking passed from generations to generations. In Laura’s story, when Tita cooked it made the elders remember the best cooks who existed in that family line who cooked and brought the family close together for happiness (Esquivel, 36). In addition, food is equated to enjoyment and life. In this book, it is noted that Tita learned the art of cooking from her surrogate mother, Nacha, who was an excellent chef. Tita did not only learn the art from the mother, but also had a talent that revealed when she was a young girl. Her talent brought happiness to the family and made her attached too much to her mother who then suggested that Tita should get married after her death. Pedro was the man who wanted to marry her and when Tita refused his hand in marriage, he married Tita's sister Rosaura. They then settled in the ranch, there after Tita prepared a dish with quills and rose-petals which drove Pedro with lust, love, and desire that eventually ended with sex. From this part of Laura’s book, we understand that Tita's food played the role of attracting love even with another woman’s husband, which is morally wrong. Finally, it is paramount to know that food has both positive and negative roles and for ease and smooth life in a family only the positive roles should be sought in order to avoid shame and hatred.
Recipes are known to be the modes of food preparation, they importantly display the way every step follows one another in order to attain the best aroma and taste of food. Whenever Tita cooked, she remained very specific during the occasion. She did not just cook food for the sake of it. Tita cooked to impress and that is what she achieved. When Laura was writing her book, she introduced every chapter with a recipe. The application of this technique in life meant that life requires a systematic plan so as to attain the best results. Shallow interruptions like those that were brought up by Mama Elena were not supposed to be entertained at all (Esquivel, 50). That is what culture is all about, to remind us about our past so that it can help us mould our future. For a recipe to correspond to its theme, research has to be conducted to explain the flavor and the anticipations of the targeted crowd. Similarly to a life recipe a research also requires to be done to satisfy the expectations of everyone. In Tita’s case, it was different because Mama Elena did not consider the love they shared with Pedro.
Food is good, it brings people together, it makes people remember their past and it also unites people. The role of food is mainly seen in two sections, in Laura’s book. During the wedding of Pedro and Rosaura, food is observed to unite people by sealing their marriage and also making the crowd happy. Tita had prepared a cake that drew people’s attention and also their...
