Human Resources are a department that many large, middle-sized, and even small businesses have. The Human Resource department has many roles and functions. Over the last few years, this has been an especially challenging position. With the long recession, many healthcare organizations faced reduced demand for services, leading to layoffs and pay cuts. In the new healthcare environment, Human Resources will still need to focus on optimizing the workforce but in radically different ways. Instead of reducing the workforce, the focus will shift to employee retention. The challenges lie in ensuring the right employees are hired, trained and utilized so they can be in the right place at the right time to meet patient needs. Recruitment and selection process of employees to retain quality staff is a national issue for all healthcare organizations (University of Phoenix, 2007). At the same time, employees need to be nurtured and developed to develop employee engagement as they work toward organizational goals.
