Hydrogen Fuel Or Others Essay

Hydrogen Fuel or Others

It is stated in the article “Benefits of a Hydrogen Economy” in Hydrogen Future that if we use hydrogen as an energy source in the U.S.A, it could help address concerns about energy security, global climate change, and air quality. Hydrogen fuel cells appear to be an one important enabling technology for increasing energy savings and reducing global climate change; however, I suggest that much more research is needed before the nation becomes absorbed in developing the hydrogen economy. In addition to the hydrogen fuel cells, the nation should continue to investigate other technologies such as new generation diesel, hybrids and solar cells. At present these ...view middle of the document...

Moreover, another vulnerable point was mentioned in the article “Road to Hydrogen Cars May Not Be So Clean.” Hydrogen is a very leaky gas that could escape from cars and hydrogen plants into the atmosphere. Hydrogen that leaks into the atmosphere binds with oxygen molecules, forming vapor and clouds. This could lead to additional global warming according to Tim Patterson, a professor at Carlton University in Canada. He claims that the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere has the most significant influence on global temperature. And Catherine G. Padro, at Los Alamos National Laboratory, says that hydrogen can act as a kind of CFC, destroying part of the earth’s atmospheric ozone which shields us from cancer-causing solar radiation. At present, there are still a lot of problems which should be investigated in detail before we commit ourselves to the use of hydrogen fuel cells.

On the other hand, hybrid petrol-electric cars such as the Toyota Prius are becoming increasingly popular. Compared with new American cars of the same size, the Prius consumes roughly half as much petrol, and so releases half as much carbon dioxide. Moreover, its emissions of smog-forming pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbon, are 90% lower. These hybrid cars cut emissions and improve fuel economy by coupling a conventional gasoline engine with an electric motor. The car’s batteries are recharged by the gas engine as we drive. This charging can come from “generative braking” when the momentum of the braking car turns the electric motor into a generator. Hybrids still use gasoline as a fuel, but they also cut emissions and improve fuel economy.

Furthermore, it was stated in the article “Diesel Cars Come Clean” that the new generation diesel engines are receiving increasing attention. It is already known that diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines. But their drawbacks have kept diesel cars from gaining general acceptance in the U.S. They have suffered from slow acceleration, a loud clatter, smoky exhaust, and an oily smell. Compared with gasoline engines, diesels also emit higher levels of nitrogen oxides,...

An Examination Of Feasible Alternative Fuels

3292 words - 14 pages alternative fuel warranting significant attention and it will quite possibly be the fuel of the future one century from now if no new methods of propulsion and / or power are discovered in the next century. Hydrogen has many advantages and disadvantages most of which seem solvable by existing technology. The most obvious advantages are that it is by far the most abundant element in the universe, it packs more energy per unit of weight than any other

The Benefits Of Fuel Cells As A Source Of Energy

2455 words - 10 pages future. How they work. In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around an electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water, and heat. Hydrogen fuel is fed into the

Fuel Systems

1000 words - 4 pages when repairing any fuel lines. After the fuel travels through the hoses it goes to the fuel filter. On fuel injected vehicles, the fuel filter is connected in the fuel line between the fuel tank and the engine. Many of these filters are mounted under the vehicle and others are mounted in the engines compartment. Most fuel filters contain a pleated paper element mounted in the filter housing, witch may be made from metal or plastic. On

Iron Instead Of Petrol

2322 words - 10 pages proved that iron can be a very efficient agent to generate hydrogen from formic acid. However, hydrogen is currently produced using energy from fossil fuels, which is a major hurdle to its development as a fuel. It can also be generated by splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. Again, this reaction requires energy from traditional means, such as fossil fuels, nuclear power or hydroelectric power. The discovery means that chemists are a step closer

1703 words - 7 pages industry, and utter significance of not proactively addressing this issue (which is always an option), it seems that UPS has three prominent methods for combating this increase in operating costs. The first alternative is to use less fuel. One way to achieve this goal is to use vehicles powered by alternative fuels or hybrid technology. While this would require substantial investment in the short-term, the effect would be a long-term fuel

Green Cars: An Introduction And Brief Economic Alalysis

Multiple studies have shown increases in non-green truck and SUV sales, even when states provide tax incentives to buy green eco-friendly cars. With new smaller diesel engines delivering higher torque power (which determines how much you can pull) and greater fuel economy at the same time, the switch to clean diesel is almost inevitable

Lotus Car Rental

Some other advantages to using hydrogen fuel vehicles is hydrogen produces carbon dioxide when burned because the only omission it makes is water vapor, making it less pollutant than gasoline operated vehicles. Not to mention hydrogen is made by passing electricity through water or by
