Iman merupakan bagian yang integral dalam kehidupan orang beriman, menempati tempat yang sentral di dalam kehidupan orang Kristen. Iman mendasari dan mewarnai segenap aspek kehidupan – mendasari sikap, perkataan, dan perbuatan kita. Iman melandasi kehidupan moral (baik/buruk; benar/salah hubungan antarmanusia), dan etik (pengambilan keputusan). Dalam kehidupan orang Kristen, iman nyata melalui sikap, perhatian, dan perbuatan kita.

Sebagai makhluk ciptaan Allah yang termulia, manusia bukan hanya mempunyai akal budi, melainkan juga kesadaran moral. Ia mampu membedakan antara yang baik dan buruk, benar dan salah. Tetapi untuk menentukan apakah suatu tingkah laku itu baik atau buruk, diperlukan suatu standar penilaian berupa ukuran moral. Kita mengenal ada dua ukuran moral, yaitu hati nurani dan norma. Hati nurani merupakan ukuran subyektif, sedangkan norma merupakan ukuran obyektif. Hati nurani dan norma berhubungan erat. Salah satu sumber nilai dan norma paling penting adalah agama. Ajaran moral dalam agama menyatakan kehendak Allah bagaimana manusia seharusnya bersikap dan berperilaku. Agama mengajarkan norma-norma yang sangat mengikat hati nurani karena keyakinan bahwa norma-normai itu wahyu dari Allah melalui para nabi. Ajaran moral diterima karena faktor iman, maksudnya ketaatan kepada Tuhan.
Manusia bukan hanya diberikan kemampuan untuk membedakan mana yang benar dan yang salah, melainkan juga untuk membuat penilaian di dalam dirinya tentang perbuatan-perbuatan yang dilakukannya. Kemampuan tersebut datang dari hati nurani. Hati nurani dapat memberikan perintah atau larangan untuk melakukan sesuatu pada saat-saat tertentu. Tidak mengikuti hati nurani berarti menghancurkan integritas pribadi kita dan menghianati martabat terdalam kita, yang berujung pada konflik batin. Ada dua bentuk hati nurani, yaitu hati nurani retrospektif dan prospektif.
