Impact of the 2010 IOM report on the Future of Nursing
Nurses have an important role in the healthcare system. Nurses are the first and last part of the chain in the patient care. During the past 40 years the nursing profession has become more popular with over 3 million of active registered nurses ("Total Number of Professionally Active Nurse," 2016), the nursing career is one of the largest and essential part in the healthcare system. During the year of 2008, The Institute of Medicine and The Robert Wood Johnson ...view middle of the document...

The general intent is for the Register Nurses holding an Associate degree to become a Bachelor of Science Nurse (BSN), the Bachelor to aim for their Masters degree, and thus. Another highlight stated the need for twice the number of Nurses with a Doctorate degree by 2020.
The IOM report on nursing education stated the education of nurses during the 20th century was not sufficient and no longer adequate for the actual challenges of the healthcare system.
Managing the health care system in the 21st century is more difficult and complex. The care environment and patient’s needs are in a constant change. Nursing competencies, research, evidence-based practice, health policies, collaboration, certifications are extremely important. Since 2002, The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) stated that a BSN is the appropriate and correct entry level for nurses, “Several countries require a BSN level nursing degree as the minimum entry for healthcare agencies” (Duckett, 2012, p. 147). Being qualified and competent in specific areas like geriatric, senior mental health and public health is rising fast. The IOM proposed a higher education for professional nurses to face the complexity of patient and communities needs. Nursing schools and colleges need to update and add more courses to their curriculum, due to the rapid growth of the health care system and higher level of requirements.
The advancement and progression for the education for nurses should be done in a consistent way and it should be the beginning for established/based education. In consideration of this report, nurses should look to expand their education and their participation with nursing organizations and committees ("The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health Report Recommendations," 2010). The IOM report is very clear in its demand for a higher and advanced degrees for nurses.
The center around nursing practice is giving patients care that is intended to satisfy their specific needs. The central idea to the nursing practice is Advance Practice Register Nurses should perform their careers to the fullest extent of their education, training and skills for the benefit of the patient ("The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health Report Recommendations," 2010). An important point of the IOM report regarding the practice of nursing, is the number of Physician Assistants (PA’s) and Nurse Practitioners (NP’s) has significantly increased meanwhile the total number of medical students and residents has decreased over the years.
It is expected in the upcoming years, the nursing profession will continue to grow due to increasing number of people insured under the Affordable Care Act; there are obstacles in the healthcare profession due to restrictive practices and law regulations in different states for advanced practiced registered nurses (Aiken, 2011). In accordance to IOM in its report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing health...
