Sebelum kita mengemukakan kepentingan penyelesaian masalah, marilah sama-sama kita mengenali penyelesaian masalah. Apa itu penyelesaian masalah?
Menurut Charles dan Lester (1982), penyelesaian masalah dapat ditakrifkan sebagai satu tugasan yang dihadapi oleh individu yang ingin atau perlu mencari sesuatu penyelesaian. Individu itu tidak mempunyai prosedur sedia ada dan mesti berusaha untuk mencari penyelesaian itu. Dalam kata lain, pemikiran kita dapat diasah dengan adanya kemahiran penyelesaian masalah dalam kehidupan seharian. Contohnya, kuiz matematik akan dapat meningkatkan kecerdasan pemikiran para pelajar kerana mereka perlu berfikir secara kreatif untuk penyelesaian.
Kepentingan penyelesaian masalah juga dapat dilihat dari segi pengaplikasian kemahiran yang dibelajari dalam menyelesaikan masalah. Kemahiran, pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang dibelajari dapat menyumbang dalam penyelesaian masalah agar kehidupan seseorang individu dapat dipermudahkan. Sebagai contohnya, pelajar-pelajar mengaplikasikan ilmu pengetahuan matematik dalam penyimpanan wang bulanan agar tidak dibelenggu masalah kekurangan wang pada akhir bulan. Dengan ini, pelajar-pelajar akan mengira wang saku yang boleh dibelanjakan dalam satu hari dengan cermat. Kesimpulannya, pelajar-pelajar akan mempunyai peluang untuk mengaplikasikan ilmu pengetahuan yang dibelajari dan bukan hanya menghafal teori dalam kelas.
Selain itu, penyelesaian masalah juga memainkan peranan penting dalam kehiduapan kita dalam membuat keputusan. Dalam proses menyelesaikan masalah, seseorang individu akan membuat keputusan yang paling bijak dan menguntungkan dengan adanya kemahiran penyelesaian masalah. Oleh demikian, kepentingan penyelesaian masalah memang tidak dapat dinafikan kerana setiap langkah atau keputusan yang diambil akan mempengaruhi kehidupan seseorang tersebut.
