Importance of the Ecosystem
American Intercontinental University
Everything on our planet is connected in some way being a community of both living and nonliving things all working together in order to sustain life, this is considered to be an ecosystem in which there are various types including the grasslands, aquatic, desert, mountains and forest. All living things require a well-regulated ecosystem in order to thrive.
The ecosystem that I have chosen to discuss is the Grasslands which are areas that are dominated by grasses with a very limited amount of trees and shrubs that are located in the temperate as well as the tropical ...view middle of the document...
The main functions of the ecosystem contain producers that are able to harvest energy from the sun by photosynthesis in using the energy to turn the carbon dioxide along with inorganic chemicals into the building blocks off life, with the consumers feeding on the captured energy and breaking up organic matter which will eventually be used again, this interaction is called the trophic interaction which both consumers and decomposes with the most mass and energy being located in the primary producer at the base of the pyramid and the secondary consumers also feeding on these and so on.
Three examples of abiotic components of the grasslands ecosystem would be the non-living things of the system in which the organisms that are living depend upon. There are four major components being climate, soil, topography, parental material and the natural disturbances. Climate which includes the wind patterns, temperature, and rainfall all influences the productivity of the land and plants. Parent material lies on top of the bedrock and is the foundation for where the soil then develops, natural disturbances changes the grasslands, things such as flooding, lightening and fires which are a result of the lightning storm s although important for maintaining the eco system in the returning of nutrients to the soil.
Three examples of biotic components of the grassland ecosystem would be the plants and animals that reside there such as prairie dogs, lion, zebra, frogs and even leaves, basically anything that is considered living and can be classified as producers, consumers and the decomposers.
The function of the ecosystem and the biochemical cycle, all ecosystems cycle matter and use energy defining the fundamental ecosystem functions, needing a continuous flow of quality energy in order to maintain function and structure. The process of the ecosystem fluctuates greatly with strong seasonal cycles which cause fluctuation in the productivity of energy from photosynthesis and carbon dioxide into organic materials throughout the years causing great change in the carbon cycle which is considered to be one of the biggest biochemical cycles. A good example of the ecosystem processes are determined by the organisms and...
