Many comprehensive information systems are available that can address the needs of all areas of a corporation. These comprehensive systems are known as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and allow companies to integrate company functions like manufacturing, finance, and product development into one information platform (Rainer Jr. & Turban, 2009). Systems such as SAP, Made2Manage, and Sage offer complete accounting software packages fulfilling all the needs of a large-scale accounting department. SAP is a modular system that allows businesses to customize the system to meet their specific needs specializing in financial management, customer relations, resource planning, product lifecycle, supplier, and supply chain management (SAP, 2011). Made2Manage is also an ERP system that is highly customizable and covers accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, budgeting, cash flow, general ledger, human resources, time and attendance, billing, and advanced report writing functions (Made2Manage, 2011). Sage’s ERP software is for small to medium-sized companies specializing in health care management, nonprofit organizations, construction and real estate, accounting, and human resources departments (Sage, 2011). Sage prides itself on being a software solution that can grow as an organization grows into complex multi-divisional organizations (Sage, 2011).
Modern companies are looking for ways to gain the competitive advantage over their competitors. Information management is one of the most effective ways to improve an organization’s efficiency. The integration of business functions through an ERP system allows management to make better decisions; therefore, enabling organizational growth while fulfilling the individual needs of each department.
