State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC) said recently that China's current price indices for clothing have picked up; garments market has entered a new cycle of branding.

Clothing market is upgrading comprehensively. From 1998 the clothing consumer and retail price index for clothing, shoes, and hats all fell below 100 and remained so for 8 years. The two indices on monthly statistics recovered and climbed above 100 in October 2006.

Retail of middle and high-grade consumer garments record a dramatic rise in clothing sales price, in the past two years.

Comfortable, hygienic and well-designed underwear will secure good sales while inferior items will be forced out of the market.

The consumption pattern and design of childrenswear will undergo a complete change. In the past, little attention was paid to the design and health factor of children's clothing. Today, as people focus more on the physical, mental and psychological development of the young generation, demand for childrenswear (including primary and secondary school uniforms) that is simple, practical and attractive is strong.

Once China enters the WTO, womenswear will be the first to bear the brunt in the clothing market. Since domestically-made womenswear lags far behind world standards in fabrics, accessories, designs and workmanship, action must be taken soon to make new breakthroughs.

Sportswear will continue to be a hit. Driven by growing health consciousness and the fitness wave across the country, sportswear has become an indispensable item in people's wardrobe. Today's sportswear stresses comfort and practicality. Low-end products will not have a market.

The tailor-made clothing market will grow further. As people increasingly go after outfits that can best express their taste and individuality, mass-produced ready-to-wear garments can no longer satisfy their needs. It can be expected that upmarket boutiques and specialty stores offering custom-made formal attires will mushroom.
