Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as the set of technologies which provide information through devices for communication or application such as wireless networks , television and satellite systems cellular phones, just to name a few. Information and Communication technology is also linked to various services and applications such as video conferencing and distance learning. This essay will therefore be focused on the impact of Information and Communications Technology in the health sector. Benefits of Information and Communications Technology to this sector will also be highlighted as well as some of the concerns that evolve around it and also an emerging ICT trend.

As with everything in life, when there’s an advantage, there is always a disadvantage and the privacy of patients is a critical one when using ICT. The privacy of patients can be violated by hackers or this system can be corrupted by illegal downloads which may then cause a lost in files or a system crash because of a virus.
Biometrics is one of today’s emerging ICTs. It is the use of a system to identify the distinguishing marks of a person. Moss, B. (2002) “Nurses, physicians and others working in health facilities require access to a variety of computerized applications running on multiple platforms. Each application typically requires its own password and PIN.” As opposed to a traditional password or PIN these marks would be used. The use of retina or iris recognition, face recognition, voice and speaker recognition just to name a few.
If can therefore be concluded that Information and Communication Technology are improving the world’s set up because they are advancing technology in a user friendly way.
