Internal Risk Assessment
Hewlett Packard Company was founded in January 1939 and was created by Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett. The company’s management uses good listening skills, engaging with customers and employees, and personal involvement for its management techniques. The new packaging design allowed the company to gain a better consistency of the company brand.
In 2002, Hewlett began it merge with Compaq Computer Corporation, Mercury Interactive, and Electronic Data Systems Corporations in 2008. Hewlett Packard also announced in 2009, that they reached an agreement to obtain a provider of computer network equipment from 3Com. This agreement would allow them to take an advantage over Cisco Systems. The expansion of 3Com will offer Ethernet switching, routing solutions, and gain the company an advantage in China. To gain a more competitive edge, Hewlett Packard acquired the smartphone provider Palm. Palm would provide HP with the ability to compete in the growing mobile device market.
Hewlett Packard also acquired Fortify Software a software security company as well as 3PAR. 3Par provided HP with the ability to expand its storage portfolio into private cloud computer environments and enterprise-class public. In order for the company to continue to provide its customers with great product the company merged with merged with two more companies ArcSight a leading security and compliance company, and Vertica, a real-time analytics company. The company’s inorganic growth provided them with the opportunity to increase its competitiveness and create value from investors and its customers.
According to Datamonitor 360 (2011), Hewlett Packard Company weakness is lack of significant presence in market segments. The lack of significant lies within Hewlett Packard’s IT market, when compared to its other competitors. The company’s portfolio lacks management consulting services and software product when compared to IBM, EMC, and Accenture. In order to improve on the company weakness, obtaining a management division will provide HP with an integrated range of services as well as a better depth of services.
According to Hewlett Packard (Hewlett Packard, 2011), commitments to their employees by promoting and rewarding based on performance and by creating a work environment that reflects the company’s values. The strengths of the companies human resources, is the commitment to the development leaders and employees. This commitment provides the company with achieving goals and maintaining the values of the company. The company’s weakness in human resources happened in 2002, when the company was accused of continually misleading shareholders about projected gains from Compaq Computer. Due to fact that the company was questioned about these allegations, Hewlett Packard Company was still able to have a successful year.
Hewlett Packard Company is a pioneer when it comes to research and development. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard began the company with revenue of $5369 and within a year the company was placed in the 21st century of becoming one of the largest technology companies in the world (Hewlett, 2011).
