Internet Technology, Marketing and Security

An online presence is vital for today’s businesses. Many major corporations use social networking and the Internet to market and sell products, which requires the collection of data in order to facilitate these purchases. Customers can also contact a sales associate and shop by phone as well (Sony Corporation, 2012).
When making purchases online, you are asked for basic information including name, address, phone number, email and credit card information. Customers are prompted to set up an account, which would store personal information for future purchases and to allow them to track any shipping for a current purchase (Sony Electronics Inc, n.d.).
Privacy policies are listed on the website in detail which state how Sony can use any information provided to them through registering or purchasing products, including network devices. Information collected is stated as (but not limited to) name, address, phone number, email address, and credit card information. The privacy policy states that by entering the information you give Sony permission to use the information Sony Corporation. (2012, February 12).
Sony used various types of Internet marketing to get their products in front of consumers. They have several twitter accounts related to the different product lines including, Sony Corporation, Sony Electronics, Playstation, and Sony Pictures (Twitter search: Sony, n.d.). Sony also has both websites, which have the online store, as previously discussed, forums, and both general and corporate information. The websites have the benefit of attracting customers to new products and allowing an easy method of purchase and comparison-shopping. They also have a presence on various search engines such as Google and Yahoo. These search results link to both shopping sites on official Sony websites and retailers who carry Sony products as well as various news or blog stories on Sony and Sony products.
Unfortunately having any kind of online presence can expose your company to the risk of data compromise and theft. This is exactly what happened to Sony Electronics, Inc., twice in early 2011. According to reports by Sony, an outdated database from 2007, which contained information on accounts with the Playstation network (an online subscription service that is a companion to Sony’s Playstation and PSP game consoles). This breach allowed account information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, account login and passwords, to be compromised and downloaded (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, 2011).
Data breaches can cause significant embarrassment for companies and makes consumers vulnerable to identity theft. Even when credit card information is not compromised, access to other sensitive information is possible when people reuse the same passwords and email addresses on various other sites as more than 30% of users do. A 2009 report cited that individuals are four times more likely to fall victim to identity theft if they have information stolen in a data breach (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, 2011).
The data breach affected 77...
