Is China Making Our Children Sick?

1301 words - 6 pages

Lead paint, supposedly outlawed, but is that a nationwide statement, or a worldwide statement? When you look at your new watch to find the maker, are you greeted with the common words of ‘made in china’? What about your children’s toys? Dora the explorer, she explored china. Thomas and his friends chugged down the great wall. Barbie strolled through Humen in search of this week’s fashion. Yet, you may take for granted the safety of your child, whilst they have a toy from such origin in their possession. But what does that mean exactly? Maybe the enforcement of America’s imported toy safety should be improved. Even if it’d be an expensive endeavor, the enforcement of product safety laws ...view middle of the document...]. Another example to show that enforcement of product safety would be expensive is, the American national debt count as of March 2014. America is in debt “$17, 471,520,518,742.13. An estimate of the population is that there are 317,774,909 citizens of America, meaning for each citizen America is in debt $54,980.81. This nation’s debt grows by about $2.69 billion per day” (Hall).
Though that in mind, America should still enforce product safety laws, especially on toys imported from China, because China is making more profit from goods imported to the U.S. than we are from importing our goods to their Country. The trade deficit exists despite the fact that U.S. exports to China were the highest in history. In 2012, the U.S. exported $110.6 billion in goods, an all-time record. Exports in 2011 were only $103.9 billion. However, imports from China also set a record -- $425.6 billion, more than the $399.3 billion imported in 2011. (Amadeo).
The most important reason why the United States should enforce product safety laws, is because the safety of America’s children is being threatened. It is reported, lead poisoning can cause “physical illness, including diarrhea and nausea, and can also...harm children’s intellectual development and their IQ levels.” (O’Neill). Another example that America’s children are being threatened is, that lengthened exposure to lead can affect a child in that, “each year in the United States 310,000 1- to 5-year-old kids are found to have unsafe levels of lead in their blood, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms, from headaches and stomach pain to behavioral problems and anemia (not enough healthy red blood cells). Lead can also affect a child's developing brain.” [As sourced by:]
But even if the fear of lead paint poisoning is apparent, it is ungrounded. America’s fear of doomsday via lead paint is not a well structured fear because, firstly the CPCS had not found it necessary to remove the toy balls and tricycles from toy shops when a report of 20 deaths from American toys in 2005. When the recall was put into place, it was said even by the toy company itself it was a voluntary, and ‘no cases of harm to children had been reported’. The effects of ‘lead poisoning’ couldn’t possibly be, simply from playing with a painted toy, lead poisoning would only come into effect from prolonged placement of a toy in a child’s mouth, or chewing off the paint on a toy. Not to mention that today in the US disease control center defined lead poisoning in children as “a level above 10 micrograms per millilitre in the body” when in 1990 the exact same...
