Is depth or breadth in each individual’s understanding more important for the progress and survival of society?

Imagine yourself in a world without specialists. No one to carry out advanced scientific research, no one to treat serious diseases, or simply no one to make top of the notch computer games. This, simply put, is a world without depth, a world which Google has developed, according to Nicholas Carr, the author of the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid”. Undeniably, depth would be required, but what about breadth? Will knowing how to manufacture laptops or knowing all the constellations of stars in the sky help such a researcher? Obviously, we can see that depth is the key to progress and hence is undoubtedly of extreme importance to society.

However, if each person only specializes in one single aspect, what about the other numerous aspects in society? Don’t we need breadth as well? While breadth in understanding in a society as a whole is indeed essential for its progress and survival, it is important for us to understand that man now live in huge societies of millions of people. All it takes is for a few people to specialize in just one aspect in society, and the sheer number of people in the society would play its part, ensuring that every single aspect in society would be specialized in, leading to a society where both breadth and depth in understanding are prevalent. Take Singapore as an example. With a population of almost five million people, we have people specializing in all the different aspects in society.
