Pornography is adultery
1. What is the main argument of the essay? You should use a diagram here, with a brief explanation of the key assertions, and of the argument’s structure.
The notion about watching pornography and having fantasies about other women leading to infidelity and divorce has been afloat for ages. The main argument of this essay is that pornography is adultery but comes with its equal share of benefits
Pornography is sometimes considered as adultery because it brings a third party into the relationship, third party can be the porn-stars in the pornographic material. The effect of these is that it can lead to serious ...view middle of the document...
The sub-arguments under the main arguments are that, first pornography should be banned from the society because it is an immorality, causes breakage of marriages, and splits up in relationships because in most cases it leads to infidelity. The second sub-argument is that people should be enlightened on the good side of pornography and is to decide depending on their judgment whether it is good or not.
3. Is the main argument deductive or inductive? Are the sub-arguments deductive or inductive? Are they strong, weak, valid, or invalid? Do any of the arguments fit one of the Argument Forms (e.g. modus ponens, disjunctive syllogism, etc.) that we’ve covered in class
The main argument is deductive because generalization of the main topic and the information we get from the argument is enough to come up with a valid conclusion without have to give deep examples. It is obviously clear that pornography leads to adultery because after the mind is provoked after watching pornography, the chances of indulging in pornography are so high because of the urge one gets after watching the pornographic material. It is also obvious that pornography has its benefits if approached in a different way. The major significance of it is that it prevents one from contracting disease like HIV, STD and herpes that one suffers from if a person were cheating physically on his partner (Shaughnessy & Byers, 2013). I believe this is an important aspect of pornography even though it is immoral and an unacceptable practice in the society. We see it has some benefits which people should be enlightened about
The sub-argument about pornography being burned is invalid because there are numerous sources of pornography and it is not practical to ban and stop the watch of pornography easily especially in recent times because of the improved state of technology and the availability of free pornographic material on the internet. It is also invalid that people should be enlightened on the benefits of pornography in a relationship. Though as we see pornography can strengthen a relationship, enlightening people on the benefits of it will, only makes people more curious on its content, which in turn leads to increase in the number of people watching the pornographic material.
The main argument fits under modus ponens because the first argument as we have seen is true about pornography being adultery because it leads to temptations that leads people to having sex outside their relationships. The second argument is also true that sex has its benefits in spite of the negative effects for example strengthening of a relationship. The sub-headings fits disjunctive syllogism because the first argument is not true that pornography should be banned to reduce adultery in marriages because even without pornography, the picture still remains in the brain hence it is still possible to indulge in adultery (Awad, 2011).. The second argument is however is not...
