Speaking to the fact that this generation grew up with distorted media (YouTube, MTV, etc.), and not the beautiful sounds their parents grew up with in the 60s and 70s, it becomes clear that this generation is disconnected from the world. This generation is afraid or losing something, but what they don’t know is that they have nothing to lose. Wake Up! brings its listeners back to a time when social movements were the norm, and Soul music reigned supreme. Even the look of the CD booklet alludes to a time when life was a little bit simpler, as opposed to the hectic lifestyle of today.
“Shine” is the only original song on the album, and it speaks to the failing school system in America today. This song serves as a more current issue that today’s youth should be moving on. The goal of this album is to literally wake up the minds of its listeners, reminiscent of the music that artists like Nina Simone put out.
