Juan Ponce de Leon
Juan Ponce de Leon was born in the village of Terra de Campos Palencia in Spain. He was descended from the Spanish royal family. As a boy he was a page in the royal court of Aragon, he became well educated in astronomy, physics, geometry, mathematics, astronomy, and several different languages. Juan was very poor so he became a solider and received fighting skills, manners, and learned more about his religion while serving a knight named Pedro Nunez de Guzman. Later he served in various military campaigns against Muslims in southern Spain for ten years until, in 1492; they were driven out of Granada. The island became popular with other settlers because it was so well run by Ponce de Leon and it had large sums of slaves and many natural resources. Ponce de Leon was also noted for his nonviolent treatment of the Indians, which was rare at the time.
Ponce de Leon was stripped of title as governor by King Ferdinand in 1512 after a political conflict, Ponce de Leon Obtained permission from the king to discover and settle in the island of Bimini, which was believed to lie some where in the northwest . He was also interested in locating a famous body of water that was said to have the power to restore youth to the aged. This myth, repeated to Ponce de Leon by the Indians, was of European origin.
