There has been a rapid proliferation of young gangs in the United States since 1980, despite our best intervention and gang prevention efforts (Champion pg. 77 2007). In 2005 there were more than 30,000 gangs 5,200 jurisdictions, with over 1 Million gang members (Champion pg. 77 2007) A majority of Juvenile gangs form in Juvenile prisons, and carry out side the prison when released. These gangs are primarily formed to get protection from there peers and there juvenile prisoners. When there are formed on the streets it is mostly for the same reason. There are three types of gangs scavenger gangs, territorial gangs, and corporate gangs. Territorial gangs are organized for the purpose of preserving a fixed amount of territory, such as several city blocks. The most violent gangs are corporate. While all types of gangs pose dangers to the public, corporate gangs are more profit motivated and rely on illicit activities such as drug trafficking to further their profit interests (Champion pg. 249 2007).
Effects on the Parents
In most cases the parents of these young delinquents have as equal if not more fault to the crimes committed. As long as the prevalent attitude of financially irresponsible parents is that the government needs to subsidize their family dreams, reforms in our public assistance system are necessary. Most of society believes that all gangs are exclusively for males who are violent, addicted to drugs and alcohol, sexually hyperactive, unpredictable, and confrontational. The truth is that these activities apply to adults more then youths. In fact females are more prevalent in adolescent gangs than you would expect. Society believes they thrive in inner-city neighborhoods where they dominate, intimidate, and prey upon innocent citizens. Individuals think gangs are basically criminal enterprises and youths starting gangs in order to collectively commit crimes. In fact gangs are started to separate or escape from a particular group of people to resist harm.
